good monitor for the money ... but be aware of its deficiencies
|
This monitor is an excellent value for the money, and works wonderfully with my G4 Power Mac. However, be aware of its pros and cons:
Pros:
- Excellent value.
- Good display up to 1280x1024.
- Very good dot pitch.
- Minimal glare (truly flat front pane).
- Vibrant colour.
- Mostly flat (but see Cons).
Cons:
- Above 1280x1024, the monitor does not support high refresh rates. Forget about 1600x1200 unless you're immune to migraine headaches.
- Not truly flat. Although the front pane is one unified frame of glass, there is still some distortion, particularly at the bottom. You can overcome some of this by playing with the viewing angle and setting it up higher relative to eyelevel, but not all of it goes away. To be fair to KDS, this is probably as good as it gets for shadow-mask, and a 19" tube is going to have more distortion than a 17" because a greater spherical cut is used (I compared it with my 17" Samsung ViewMaster 753DF and the Samsung is ever-so-slightly straighter, though by little). It's still much flatter than a regular CRT, but it's not straight-edge perfect. Sony gets slightly more flatness, although for much more money and with those annoying stabilizer wires.
- Strange smell when you first turn it on. Burn it in for about 72 hours to get rid of this. It seems to be a common problem with this line; others have reported it.
In short, if you're looking for a durable CRT for a nice price, and don't mind it not being totally draughtsman perfect flat, you'll do well with this. |
