Not surprisingly, the standard short antenna located among the cables on the back of a desktop computer didn't work well.
I tried changing to high gain antennas on both the computer and access point (HGA7S, $49 list and HGA7T, $72 list, both overpriced), but saw no improvement. Then I tried this antenna stand, to move the computer's antenna to a better location (determined by trying several locations within reach of the cable). The signal went from "very low" to "very good".
I also moved the access point to a place closer to the center of the house (in the top of a closet on the floor below).
Highly recommended, although it would be nice if the cable was a little longer. |
