♥♥♥♥ Great if you want to carry video everywhere you go.
This unit is a video player that has extra features. If you are looking for an MP3 player or a photo storage device look elsewhere as this unit isn't something you're going to want to carry around much. Not that it's huge, mind you; but it isn't as compact as your typical MP3 players. Picture a pack of cigarettes. Cut another pack across its middle, & then attach that vertically to the other pack. That's its size (same thickness as cigarettes too). The AC charger (for the USA) is 3 3/4 inches long, 2 inches wide, & is 1 1/8 inches thick---not huge, but substancial. What's great about this unit? The prime feature this mPack has that few other such units have is that you can record direct off a VCR/DVD---even Betamax (for your old tapes) whether you have a TV or NOT! You can record direct off a TV too. You just attach the red/white/yellow prong A/V plugs into the desired unit and plug the other end into the mPack earphone in/out jack. Go to the audio/video recorder menu and press start. That's it. Of course, such recording isn't compressed so it eats up 1GB for every 3 1/2 hours of such recording. Watching films or TV programs you recorded is very clear on its 3 by 2 inch screen. You can also use the previously mentioned cables to play what you recorded on your TV (or a hotel room TV) but it obviously isn't as sharp once it's projected on a 19-23 inch screen, but nowhere near as blurry as you might imagine (since it records at a higher resolution than its small screen can display; for just this purpose). It also acts as a typical MP3 player & has a built-in FM radio (which can be recorded too). The MP3 features are limited---random play within files or by individual playlists, but that's about it. It has great photo storage too and free video basic Chinese lessons (being as it is made in Taiwan). What's not good? Some DVDs with some sort of copyguard in them will not record clearly onto this mpack. "Seinfeld" & "Hogan's Heroes" episodes I recorded easily onto the mPack, but M*A*S*H & "The Honeymooners" on DVD came over scrambled. (I've never tried recording video utilizing a computer.) So, it's hit & miss what you can do, regarding DVD video. Most videotapes, however, can be copied onto the mPack. You can also directly record CD audiobooks/music/cassette tapes right to the mPack. Again this is not as compressed as a computer transfer, but it's great when you don't have computer access. (1 GB can hold 7 hours of such audio). In short, this is a great unit if you want to travel with video; if you do a lot of travelling, but isn't small enough/light enough if you are more interested in music or photo storage. Asides: It has a speaker so you can listen without the (average quality) earbuds it comes with. This is great for watching video especially. The voice recorder is ok, but don't expect it to record from any great distance. I doubt it would be useful for recording lectures, etc. The instruction book is in 4 languages (Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English) and is rather large (5 by 8 inches & an inch thick---not something you'd want to carry). The ease of use of the mpack is its strongest point (you can pack it with over a hundred hours of video without even having a computer, for instance---a lot more with computer compression). As of 2005 this unit was being sold outside of the USA primarily, but you might be able to get it from some tech retail suppliers online. Yes, the new iPod is a lot cooler and a lot smaller, but then again so is the iPod screen. The mPack you can actually watch video with (it stands up on a table even) and it isn't a strain for your eyes...AND you don't need earphones since it has a speaker. Cheers
