Possibly too many features

I've had this unit in my car for about two years as of this writing (06/13/06). I like it in general - it has truly amazing sound separation between my car's four speakers. It also packs a lot of power for the price. My gripes about it are:
It has so many ways to adjust the sound that you could go off the road just trying to adjust it. Do not try to do this without the included remote control (they coulda though of including some kind of holder for this small, easily-misplaced piece) - the buttons on the face are so small as to be useless. Once you get the sound tailored to your liking, it's only a small matter to tweak it after that, once you get used to the controls.
Generally, audiophiles will sort of sneer at lowly Pioneer - probably because it's available in such low-end retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy. I have found over the years that Pioneer makes feature-packed products that have an unmatched durability in the marketplace - their stuff just keeps going.
This unit started to have a bit of difficulty ejecting CD's after only a few months. As of now, there's a CD stuck in there with no "emergency" way to eject it. Since I've hit the eject button multiple times, the unit thinks there's no CD in there so my only listening choice is radio (and I hate radio). Pioneer's website's "Knowledge Base" has no entiries for this unit, so I'm about to go at it with a paperclip and hope for the best. The owner's manual is totally lacking a troubleshooting section. For this reason, I downgraded the unit from five stars to three. Stuff like this jammed CD thing will happen and Pioneer should have made some allowance for it. |
