It's the difference between acceptable and crystal-clear, to select clearType from the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" in the "Effects" dialog of the "Display Properties" property-sheet( Windows XP ). For such an important setting to be so deeply nested into the UI - sigh...
