Everything I was looking for, plus some bonuses
|
Let me preface this review by saying that I don't write reviews. However, the performance of this little mp3 player has prompted me to contribute a review to amazon.
Here are the things I was looking for when I started my search about a year ago:
- Small enough so I can go running with it
- Can be used as a USB flash drive (therefore can drag-and-drop music files, and wouldn't require any cables to hook it up to a computer)
- Has a rechargeable battery that is recharged by plugging into a USB drive
Here are some of the extras that came as a bonus for me:
- A 4-line screen
- A navigation menu, so you can choose a specific song or a folder of songs
- A voice recorder (which I found to be a godsend; This is the reason why I carry it around in my pocket all the time now.)
- An FM radio
- You can personalize a lot of the settings (Another review mentioned that the blue light doesn't stay on for long enough; You can set this, although it'll never work well as a flashlight. That reviewer also complained about the brightness; You can set this. There's even a "User" button where you can set what it sets.)
A huge caveat about this player I should address is that it took a lot of trial and error to "flash" the drive correctly so that I could read it as a USB drive on my computer. This is useful because I could just "drag and drop" music files instead of using other software. (Other reviewers had mentioned compatibility with Windows Media Player 10/11; Flashing the drive would rid you of having to deal with this issue.) I am a fairly computer-savvy person, but it took me a number of tries over the span of a year to finally get it right. (I can't seem to find the instructions I found online to do this correctly, but I'll edit this post if I ever come across it again.) The problem with flashing though, is that I don't think you'll be able to use it on Macs, but for my personal use, I could care less.
Another small inconvenience is that it takes 9 seconds (according to my unofficial timing) to start-up and begin playing music. To me, that is 7 seconds too long, but that's a small thing to complain about.
As a closing note, I want to add that I've tried the iPod shuffle (which I won in a raffle after buying this Samsung), the iPod nano, and a cheap Philips mp3 player, and I can confidently say that after close to a year of consistent use, the Samsung is far superior in every way. If you are looking for something that matches my checklist above, you'll like this device. |
