Comfy Cans That Sound Great!
|
I needed an alternative to my 5.1 speakers when watching movies late at night on my computer, and these fit the bill perfectly!
They were a bit stiff when I first got them but they loosen up fairly quickly. The earpads are very comfy and have deep pockets for the bigger eared folk among us. The cushion on the actual head band is thick and comfy as well. I have a pretty big melon but only had to adjust these about halfway and I was sitting pretty. Theres times I actually forget I'm wearing them at all!
Now to be honest, these are the first pair of decent cans I've owned. I read tons of review sites but even the most expensive $800+ headphones got mixed reviews. It seemed to me everyone has different tastes in what sounds good. I don't consider myself an audiophile but can definitely tell the difference between these and my $5 headphones that came with my old computer!
I mainly use these for movie watching on the computer but also play games and listen to music. I use an Xtreme Gamer soundcard which makes it easy to switch from gaming mode, to music mode, to movie mode! Very convenient. I'm not entirely sure how it works but using the simulated surround sound on my soundcard actually works! It has a demo of a helicopter buzzing around your head which really does sound like its right there, hovering around your head! Very good reproduction.
The only two things I'm not a big fan of is the open ear design and huge 3.5 adapter. When I was reading reviews I read mixed opinions but most said the open ear design produces a truer sound. I originally was leading towards the HD-280 PRO's which are closed cup. Sometimes I wish I had simply because these headphones are almost like mini-speakers! Anyone else in the room will be able to hear clearly what it is your listening to. If privacy is of no concern or there isn't someone trying to sleep right next to you this won't be an issue for you.
The included adapter is HUGE. Why it doesn't just come with a standard 3.5mm connection is beyond me. It seems 3.5mm is the most widely used connection and don't think the HD-555's are commonplace with people using professional equipment that uses a 1/4" jack . I couldn't imagine plugging this thing into an ipod, as the 1/8" adaptor + the 1/4" connector is bigger than the ipod itself! I use these on my desktop but it's still a hassle having such a long piece sticking out from my computer. If someone accidentally hits it the plug will snap right off.
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase. I find myself wearing these more than I use my 5.1 setup, especially in games. I just get more accurate directional audio using these over my speakers. Being able to hear someone sneaking up behind you or distinguishing where gunfire is coming from is a must in FPS games. So while I'm sure theres better headphones out there for more money I'm happy I got these. They sound awesome and give you an advantage while gaming, movies come to life, and music really pops. I would buy them again and look forward to my next Sennheiser purchase which will be a closed cup design. |
