Sony LF-X5 LocationFree 7" LCD TV description

Hit the road with not merely a stylish portable television, but a flat-panel LCD TV capable of letting you surf the Web and check e-mail--wirelessly--from just about anywhere on the planet. Sony's LF-X5 LocationFree TV weighs little more than a pound and comes with stereo headphones and a carry case.

The wireless LF-X1 system consists of a 7-inch LCD TV with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, 800 x 480 native pixel resolution, and an accompanying base station.

Enjoy your favorite programming in your favorite spot with the 7-inch LocationFree TV.
The base station houses most connection terminals, an NTSC broadcast tuner, and a wireless transmitter. The monitor runs on either of two supplied rechargeable lithium batteries (one standard, one long-life), while the battery charger works on universal power (AC 100 to 240V) for use in most countries.

Using Sony's first dual-band wireless system (2.4 and 5 GHz), the base station transmits video content to the touch-panel screen--there's no mouse required. The set delivers stable video and audio signals without interference from other 2.4 GHz devices, such as microwave ovens and cordless phones. Internet and TV content arrives from the base station by way of secured device authentication and encryption technology, making the system perfect for Internet surfing in Wi-Fi hotspots and via Ethernet ports found in hotels, airports, and other locations.

The innovative system employs the IEEE 802.11a/g protocol for a wide selection of transmission channels, and it switches the channel automatically to minimize monitor interference across a range of up to 100 feet from the base station. The 802.11a/g standards support a higher bit rate than the conventional 802.11b standard, helping the set maintain stable, high-quality video images. The LocationFree TV also uses advanced QoS (Quality of Service) technology, which delivers extra bandwidth security for reliable audio-video transmissions, even in high-traffic wireless environments.

The LocationFree TV autoselects the strongest wireless signal so you get the best transmission wherever you are.
When the base station and the wireless monitor are each connected to the Internet through your existing ISP, you can easily and quickly access the Web, exchange e-mail, and shop online using the onscreen keyboard. It can also morph into a digital photo album, displaying custom slide shows from its built-in memory or from a CompactFlash card, which plugs into a dedicated flash-memory port. You may also play MPEG-1 video files from a CF card.

Filling the role of an intuitive graphical use interface (GUI), the onscreen universal remote and onscreen keyboard heighten the LocationFree TV's uniqueness and versatility. Sony's GUI simplifies navigation of all aspects of the set. You can even use the screen itself as a remote to switch from channel to channel or from function to function.

The base station houses an Ethernet port for broadband compatibility and 2 video inputs for audio/video components and other peripherals (S-video, composite-video). There's also IR blaster for added control and convenience.

What's in the Box
The LocationFree TV, a base station, stereo headphones, a quick-start guide, an IR blaster, two rechargeable batteries (1 standard and 1 long-life), a carrying case, an instruction manual, and a stylus.

♥♥♥♥ After Getting Past Initial Setup, it's a 5 STAR product...
I agree with the previous review that it can be a bit of a pain getting it set up.. but once we bought a router, and the misc. paraphenalia associated with that, we were ON our way!

I have to disagree with the previous reviews that state you cannot access yahoo or hotmail.. NOT SO. I have accessed my yahoo mail, hotmail account, etc.... and have browsed the web using google, yahoo, msn, etc. The ONLY thing I cannot do as of yet (but I think there may be a way) is access my instant messaging accounts. If I could do that, it would earn this product 5 star ratings hands down.

The ONLY negative thing about this product as far as design is the undeniable fact that one day I will lose my grip and drop it.

There really needs to be a slip on cover that leaves the screen bare, but that would protect the corners/edges if it were to be dropped or fall from the counter, etc. It's lightweight, which is great, but I can't shake that overwhelming feeling that dropping it is inevitable. It's somewhat difficult to get a good grip on due to the fact that the screen covers almost the entire surface.

Bottom line - we are still reading and learning about all of this product's uses, but within a matter of hours we were able to watch t.v., surf the web, and fiddle on email fairly easily.

Would not recommend this product for children under 14. It's definitely not a toy.
