Most noise-reducing headphones feature large over-the-head or behind-the-neck headbands, making them a bit bulky to use while traveling or working out. Not so the Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia headphones, whose ultra-light in-the-ear design sounds great while minimizing distracting ambient noise. The closed-type construction makes the headphones a perfect fit for airline, train, or bus travel, or while dancing or skating to your own tune. The phones owe their audio performance to the extra-small 9 mm drivers and neodymium magnets fitted inside each earpiece. The drivers and magnets combine to generate high-intensity sound, with a deeper-than-expected bass response (as low as 6 Hz) and refreshingly crisp mid- and high-range tones. Listeners will also welcome the two sizes of ear buds that come with the headphones, ensuring that users find the right match for their individual ear shapes. extremely comfortable

I find all plastic earbuds like those that come with the iPod very uncomfortable to wear because of the hard plastic pressing into my ear. They are better with foam pads, but those pads frequently fall off and disappear. I find these Sony in-ear earphones far more comfortable, especially for long periods of time, because only the soft rubber earpiece touches my ear. I find the sound quality markedly better than earbuds.

I also own a pair of much more expensive Shure earphones. The Shure's do sound better, but I find myself still returning to the Sony's because they are extremely lightweight and more comfortable. They also pack-up smaller because their cords are much thinner than Shure and some other more expensive headphones. I'm writing this review as I buy my second pair of them to keep at work on my desk (replacing a very old set of headphones that just broke).

Of note, they may or may not work for you in the gym. They work for me, but my g/f says when she works up a sweat the slick rubber loses all ability to stay in her ears. She does lots of cardio and bouncing, which I'm sure it part of it. The Sony MDR-EX81LP model has a loop around the top of your ear which reviews indicate works better for workouts, though I don't use them as I wear glasses which I think would interfere with the loops.
