Portable unit that takes many formats
|
The box says that it supports DVD+-Rw discs and CD/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD discs. I know for a fact that it takes DVD+R and CD-RW discs for sure. There is a region hack for this drive that I won't post here, but it actually does work. Now I can play discs from any region and be able to carry around a moderately heavy player that's compact with a 3.5" screen.
The screen is a bit pixelated, but if you carry it around with you, you can get past it. The box and manual don't say this, but the unit will play VideoCD and SuperVideoCD discs. It doesn't seem to like DVDs recorded at 352x480, but unless you're burning from a Tivo in Basic and Medium qualities direct without any conversion, then you won't mind.
It lasts a brief 2.5 hours, but has a 9v DC adapter port which should be able to take an external battery. This 2.5 hr life is still longer than my old 5G iPod video, though.
All in all, it's a decent unit that does more than I was expecting. It can be a bit heavy in your hand, but if you set it down with its stand, it's not too bad. Even going for a walk wasn't too bad. It's like having a 5 pound weight in your hand. The display gets a little washed out by the sun, but not as bad as the original iPod 5G.
I'd recommend it as something that's convenient enough to take to the gym and it can also play MP3 CDs (and you can turn the display off for that and the CD feature to save battery life to get it up to 6 hrs.)
One thing about the unit, though. You can navigate through the menus with the directional control, but you can't jump to the menu from a playing DVD unless you hit Stop twice and lose your place in the movie... minor inconvenience, but you can overlook it. |
