The Shoes of the Fisherman
If you find during the 160-minute running time of The Shoes of the Fisherman that you don't like the plot, wait 10 minutes. It will surely change and there will be another story thread to entice you. The screenplay is literally all over the map: Siberia, where Archbishop Kiril Lakota, played splendidly by Anthony Quinn, has been exiled to a work... »

Billy Budd
This film was on the way to being one of the best adaptations of literary fiction of all time when it threw it all away in the last 3 of 120 minutes. Please believe everything positive people say about this film and more. There will simply never be a better cast assembled to film this Melville novella, and the handling and treatment are visionary and... »

A Midsummer Night's Dream
I love Shakespeare's work in most of its incarnations. This version of A Midsummer Night's Dream was purchased to show at a retirement community to celebrate the summer solstice - there were several to pick from and this one with a very young Judi Dench and Helen Mirren seemed the most worthy. I was disappointed on first glimpse at the poor color qua... »

The Looking Glass War
The Looking Glass War is a mediocre adaptation of John Le Carre's novel of the same name. The acting is stilted and awkward, the screenplay poor, and the whole thing feels contrived, which it is. Even Anthony Hopkins' performance is poor. Bought it, watched it, put it up on eBay.
If you are looking for John Le Carre stories that have succe... »
